The world is under strain, however optimism persists. A fresh honor originating at the interdisciplinary festival Starmus will motivate the public to make a difference.

The Starmus Jane Goodall Earth medal will be given in honour of the celebrated scientist and conservationist who passed away this year. It seeks to acknowledge those who advocate for life on Earth.

The Medal's Framework

Initial honorees will be revealed at the upcoming Starmus event in the Canary Islands, scheduled from 17–22 October next year.

Reports indicate that Goodall, a former member of the festival's board, had backed the medal's establishment. “The concept behind this award, and the festival being tasked with organising it, was Jane's wish,” a representative said. “She said she would like for this to occur. And I think due to the close bond she had with the festival.”

“This medal will acknowledge ongoing initiatives carried out to build an environment improved for people, animals and the environment and offer support for the continuation such efforts,” commented a relative.

Structure and Vision

A co-founder of the festival noted that the medal – unveiled at a scientific institution – will likely have multiple categories.

“It will be very much similar to the Stephen Hawking medal honoring scientific outreach that we created a decade past,” he explained. Jane Goodall was a recipient of that award.

Expressing concern about the future for Earth, one figure said, “To be truthful, it’s very hard to maintain optimism. The current political climate globally represents a dismissal of evidence. So this really cripples global initiatives.”

“Realistically, the situation appears particularly bright therefore we must commence reconsidering, with greater urgency regarding the impact of human activity. This concern encompasses not just global warming, that’s the whole way that we treat our environment.”

Following an Example

As a result, observers believe it was an opportune moment to follow her guiding principles. “It is believed that in bestowing this medal, the focus will be on this core philosophy that Jane embodied – which made her priority, to change how we regard the other animals around us.”

Another key issue today involves the spread of misinformation. The central topic of next year’s festival will be “the search for truth”.

“There is a recognition that factual reality has become a matter of debate when politics are involved. And it’s an alarming trend,” he commented. “Climate research remains a scientific discipline; you cannot have any influence from politics in this field.”

Optimism and Resolve

The goal remains that this honor will inspire concrete steps. “It’s about motivating others to get involved and to show concern and to work in that direction, really. Regardless of if we feel hopeful, we must look at doing our utmost,” a statement concluded. “Be prepared for failure, but you still continue striving toward success.”

A family member engaged in environmental protection expressed confidence that “with guidance and once enabled, humanity are capable of being diligent stewards of Earth”, pointing to the initiatives of a foundation that, among its other activities, helps the next generation get involved with their community, animals, and the natural world.

“As my late grandmother constantly told everyone, our daily actions are significant and the responsibility lies with us the kind of difference we make,” he said. “We still have an opportunity and the Starmus Jane Goodall Earth medal will offer support and raise awareness about beneficial initiatives that are being undertaken.”
