Paris Saint-Germain Overcomes Marseille via Spot-Kicks to Lift Trophee des Champions Season-Opening Trophy in Kuwait.

Trophy celebration scene

The Parisian club has now won the season-opening cup on fourteen different times.

Paris Saint-Germain needed a dramatic equaliser followed by a perfect spot-kick decider to get past Marseille in Kuwait and secure a record-extending fourth consecutive Trophee des Champions title.

The European champions appeared to be sailing towards a comfortable win in the match featuring the Ligue 1 winners and the French Cup winners after the French winger opened the net in the opening stages.

However, the southern French side struck twice late to seize a shock lead. Initially, the English forward scored from the penalty spot, before Willian Pacho unfortunately turned the ball into his own net for an own-goal.

In a remarkable twist of events, the Portuguese striker snatched a crucial leveler in the dying moments to force the match into a deciding shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Lucas Chevalier then emerged as the hero, stopping decisive attempts from O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

In the shootout, Goncalo Ramos, the midfielder, Nuno Mendes, and Desire Doue all converted with composure for PSG to seal a 4-1 penalty victory.

Now 14-time champions Paris Saint-Germain, who met last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Olympique de Marseille after completing a league and cup double, have now won this competition for the 12th time in the past thirteen seasons.
