On his first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reinvent” the metropolis, declaring “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious beginning to his term.

A Historic Leader

The 34-year-old political star, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A opportunity of this kind is rare and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose hold the levers of change,” Mamdani stated.

Rejecting advice to be modest, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will rule expansively and audaciously.”

Governing with Democratic Socialist Principles

Mamdani openly embraced his political ideology. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not compromise my ideals for worry of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to loud cheers.

The inauguration was a two-part event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a old subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over political establishments.

An Ambitious Policy Agenda

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a plan promising:

• Subsidized daycare
• Fare-free public buses
• A halt to rent increases for approximately 1 million households
• A experiment of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion expense of these services may prove difficult to secure. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the wealthiest New Yorkers and corporations. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing External Headwinds

The new mayor also faces apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past comments regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past comments.

Mamdani has sought to ease these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was described as surprisingly productive.

The Core Tests of Leadership

Ultimately, New York mayors are judged on their success in delivering city upkeep: sanitation, reducing the rodent problem, fixing potholes, and ensuring smooth subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's anti-crime efforts, pointing to record low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky warning about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his remarks with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
